Ajuan Mance is an Oakland artist, author, and English professor at Mills College. This cover was created specially for COG in the style of Mance's well-received online sketchbook: 1001 Black Men.
The brash, brightly colored images of 1001 Black Men assert and celebrate the individuality of black men. As Mance writes, “In this series of drawings, I push past entrenched stereotypes to create images of Black men that reflect the wonderful complexity of African American lives.”

Cogitate, an original audio broadcast produced at Cogswell Polytechnical College, was inspired by the work of one Bay Area storyteller in particular: Glynn Washington, host of NPR/PRI’s Snap Judgment.
We heart Snap Judgment. So a thousand thanks to Glynn, who permitted us to interview him in our debut issue.
In this issue, we will hear from Jon Panzer, Lisa Schiffman and Tay "Off the Top".
Please enjoy Cogitate 1, It’s Like That?

Life be pourin’ out ‘em, like trains skippin’ off rails.
Movies tell stories I wish I could live.”
